The Drivestick Engineering
Clause Technology Engineering the DriveStick - The Electric Vehicle (EV) Urgently Needs Better Steering Control
The steering wheel and pedals are too clumsy for the EV's quick electric motors. The enabling technologies for the DriveStick are already available and being used in EVs: compact electric motors, bilateral teleoperation, and fail-operate.

Fail-operate involves duplicate electronics and motors to allow driving even with an electrical failure.
Bilateral teleoperation provides both feedback and feedforward to let the driver control the car while receiving accurate road feel.
The modern EV, with electric steering, propulsion, and braking, is rapidly replacing the combustion car. The EV's ultra-responsive electric motors can provide exhilarating performance, but they're impeded by the clumsiness of the obsolete steering wheel and pedals. The EV needs a quicker, nimbler, more intuitive control that can advance driving to the next level and make it feel like piloting a spaceship instead of wrestling a hand wheel and stomping on foot pedals. A drive-by-wire control like a joystick will accomplish this by taking better advantage of the EV's quick electric motors, but the right type of joystick is crucial.
TwistDriveTM for Twisty Roads: The DriveStick®
Carmakers have been developing concept cars with arm-controlled tilt joysticks since 1954. The joystick's two independent axes are inadequate to provide both propulsion control and high-precision steering.
A new type of joystick, a 3-axis joystick with wrist-controlled twist, overcomes this problem. The DriveStick is a drive-by-wire, 3-axis, twist joystick that uses a revolutionary technology called TwistDrive to provide quick steering and propulsion control for safely carving up twisty roads in a high-performance EV. Using a modern torque motor, electronic fail-operate, and bilateral teleoperation technologies, the DriveStick replaces the steering wheel, control stalks, and foot pedals while providing steering precision and road feedback better than the conventional steering wheel. TwistDrive enables quick, high-resolution control at all vehicle speeds without the need for variable ratio steering, speed adaptive steering, or other auxiliary methods. And the bilateral teleoperation built into the DriveStick ensures safe, stable steering and accurate road feedback.
Safer than the Steering Wheel and Pedals
The U.S. is facing a public health crisis: 4.5 million crashes, 2 million injuries, 34 thousand deaths every year. Drivers need safer manual controls than the steering wheel and pedals. The DriveStick will provide increased safety through its unique features: more compact than a steering wheel and pedals, allowing more room for the driver and the airbags; simpler and more intuitive due to its single integrated control; and quicker, nimbler operation, making it easier for the driver to avoid a crash.
